Mr Tony Adams has asked for the following letter to be included:
Dear Sir,
I was shocked to find the consultation on the reorganisation of local government was rigged. There must be a public enquiry.
Ruth Kelly announced in a speech on the 5th July 2007, there would be a white paper on local government and said. “Where there is a broad cross section of support for change and where our criteria are met. I won’t stand in their way”. So if we wanted it we could have it, if we did not, we need not have it. The most important criterion for the consultation on the white paper was that for the changes to take place “There must be a broad consensus of support”. But in the event, it became obvious that a majority of voters were against the changes. A Mori poll and two other polls in Cheshire gave “against” votes of between 55 and 85 per cent.
An instruction was given in the middle of the consultation period to change the vital criterion to “There must be a likelihood of a broad consensus of support”. With one weasel word, this meant that the government would ignore our wishes on every important issue, the loss of local democracy. I am sure that we cannot tolerate manipulation of this sort. It is the beginning of dictatorship and must be resisted.
We must have a public enquiry. Who gave this instruction? Did the MPs realise that they were being asked to approve legislation based on rigged information? How can this injustice be rectified? I would think by clear referendums, for or against change in each county.
Please will you all send a signed copy of this letter to your MP and local council. You will soon be able to download a copy from www.nocouncilnotax.org.uk
Also download the car sticker. But I hope we will not get to the point of withholding our council tax on the basis of “No taxation without representation”.
Yours faithfully, Tony Adams.
